Workshop: Statistics for Nutrition Research

“Statistics for Nutrition Research” is a workshop designed for all who have completed Research Methods modules as part of their first degree (BSc). It is a refresher workshop covering basic statistical concepts and some advanced techniques (ANOVA model selection). Delegates are required to bring laptops with an installed version of SPSS.

Workshop: Community of Practice for Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Severe Malnutrition

The IMTF in collaboration with the African Nutrition Society invites you to a workshop on the Communities of Practice for prevention and treatment of severe malnutrition. The workshop will be held during the VII African Nutrition and Epidemiology Conference, in Marrakech, Morocco to be held from 9th to 14th October 2016.

Aim and purpose

The aim of the event is to bring together nutritionists/food technologist/health workers to interact together by sharing experiences and techniques that they have used, which have proved to be efficient in the prevention and treatment of severe malnutrition. The purpose of this is to promote community engagement. The workshop will enable the following:

  • Working together for a common good
  • Networking between professionals
  • Sharing of experiences
  • Learning from the wrongs of others
  • Adopting positive outcomes
  • Sharing of resources.

Who can attend?

The workshop is open to related professionals who are working in or interested in prevention and
treatment of malnutrition, such as:

  • Those who train, educate, lecture, research and are involved in policy on prevention
    and treatment childhood acute malnutrition and its management
  • Food scientists/technologist with interest in product development for malnutrition
    treatment/prevention

FAO special orientation session: Scaling-up professional training in Nutrition Education for Sustainable Behaviour Change

Background

With the support of the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), FAO started the ENACT Project “Education for Effective Nutrition in Action” in January 2012, which objective was to develop and pilot a university-level course in nutrition education (the ENACT course) with a view to build local capacity of future or current professionals in planning, implementing and evaluating nutrition education for behaviour change.

The ENACT professional training course in nutrition education was then developed in English by FAO together with African partner universities in Botswana, Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda, who piloted the course. ENACT applies the best practices of professional training in nutrition education and emphasizes diverse foods and diets as a basis for good nutrition, and nutrition education as a process whereby individuals in society are empowered to adopt lifelong health eating habits. The course includes 11 units and can be delivered in an 11-week period. ENACT is a new approach for many: it involves a lot of independent study, emphasis on the local context, highly interactive tutorials and real-life practice, including “outside activities” and a mini-project in nutrition education.

The course has been translated, piloted and adapted by five Francophone African universities in Benin, Burundi, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Niger, as part of the FAO ENAF project (the francophone version is called the ENAF course). Two professors in each university received on-the-job training on the course approach in addition to being able to deliver the course to future student intakes.

Purpose of this workshop

The objective of the present orientation workshop is to introduce the ENAF course to new tutors who wish to integrate a nutrition education course into their university / training curricula.

In that sense, FAO would be contributing to meet SDG 4, target 4.7 in “ensuring that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including, among others, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles”.

Learning objectives

The participants will:

  • Understand what nutrition education is and why it is needed ;
  • Appreciate the need for a nutrition education training approach based on best practices: direct experience and practice, independent learning, interactive discussions and application to local nutrition needs and activities to build capacities and skills for behaviour change ;
  • Determine how the course could be integrated into the university/training curricula.

Approach

Two professors who have piloted the ENAF course in their institutions will be facilitating this workshop that will consist on a course introduction, group activities and plenary discussions. A brainstorming session will help the participants understand the notion of nutrition education, followed by an overview of the ENAF course and approach and trying-out some course activities. The last sessions will be dedicated to discussions about the possibility of adapting, using and integrating the course in their institutions. The course will be limited to 25 participants. The workshop will be provided in French, as participants from Francophone African Universities are especially targeted.

Pre-workshop tasks

Before the workshop, participants will be requested to familiarize themselves with the ENAF project by visiting the project website (http://www.fao.org/nutrition/education-nutritionnelle/professional-training/enaf/fr/) and will be sent a Dropbox link from which they can download the ENAF course material. They will be asked to reflect on a few issues relating to their own context, such as their own perceptions of nutrition education, their country’s nutrition issues, nutrition education activities and nutrition education training currently available.

AuthorAID Travel Grants 2016

Nevin Scrimshaw’s INF travel fellowships for ANEC7

The International Nutrition Foundation in collaboration with Africa Nutrition Society (ANS) has launched the ANEC Travel Fellowship for 2016. This is open to University Students or Young Scientists with an interest in nutrition who wishes to participate in the ANEC conference 2016. Four to five bursary awards of $800 – £1000 are available; this is given as a contribution to travel costs, accommodation and conference participation.

IUNS Re-Integration Grant

IUNS have launched a Re-Integration grant, this is to enable early career nutritionists who have completed their doctoral training in a developed country to start their career and/or settle in their jobs in their home country.

Three awards of $10,000 are available, one grant will be given to each of the following regions: Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The deadline for this is the end of June 2016.
